This is the cover of the new book I am working on. It will be in the vein of "Oh, the places you'll go!" It will be published by Cedar Fort in 2018
Every Christmas I make a few hand drawn Christmas cards. Here's one I did this year using the Mad Hatter fom Alice in Wonderland (the animated Disney version).
A lot of people tell me they can only draw stick figures. That's where we all start. You just keep on drawing and it builds from there.
Where the Wild Things Are was one of my favorite books as a child. There was green shag carpet in my bedroom that I pretended was grass and I wanted trees to grow and vines to appear like in the book.
I've always liked the David Wiesner book "Tuesday." It's a nearly wordless journey of a night frogs ride flying lily pads. It's beautiful and ignites the imagination. And like In the Night Kitchen it shows what goes on when kids have to be in bed. What really goes on? Not much. But there are a lot of kids who think there's a conspiracy to keep them from seeing the magic that happens. Santa, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny - these all come at night. Why not more things?
I started thinking of my sketches as opportunities to tell stories. "Get down here this minute!" - While looking at the triceratops skeleton I thought it'd be fun to climb. This dinosaur skull was the size of a watermelon. So I added some little people. . although dinosaur skulls can be huge and these could be seen as normal sized people. I saw this rat on display and I thought it could be Templeton from Charlotte's Web bringing back the piece of paper with "crunchy" on it.
My street has been getting some work done. After the workers finish for the day they leave the backhoe on the street. They just leave it there. . . .
